There is a great little Tico style restaurant in Liberia called Pan Y Miel (bread & honey). It’s a very basic breakfast & lunch place where the locals eat. The food served for lunch is typical Costa Rica style: rice, beans, grilled chicken, fried fish, salad, fried plantains, mashed potatoes and vegetables. Breakfast items are similar but include scrambled eggs & sausages. They bring out the lunch items around 11am.
It’s a buffet style restaurant in Liberia where you tell the person behind the bar what you want and you pay per item. It’s very cheap and yesterday I had rice, beans, grilled chicken and a bottle of Coca Cola for 2500 colones (about $5US). Looking at my receipt I noticed the rice and beans were 250 colones ($0.50) each and the chicken was 1000 colones ($2) and the Coke was 800 colones ($1.60). Really good value and quite delicious!

The surroundings are not fancy by any means but it’s great to try to blend in a little with the locals at a restaurant in Liberia. Needless to say they don’t speak a word of English there but if you are struggling you can just point to the food that you want! Another time I ordered a mini-pizza and a Coca Cola and it cost 1400 colones (just under $3).
The tricky thing is that there is no sign outside the restaurant! So you just have to look out for it. It’s located on the main street in Liberia between the traffic lights at Burger King heading towards downtown and the church & park. It’s beside Casa Blanca store on the right hand side heading towards the church, between Panaderia Alemana German Bakery and a Canon camera store.
Pan Y Miel is a good restaurant in Liberia where you can eat what the locals eat, having a tasty yet inexpensive lunch!
